7.2 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes From The Mariana Islands: USGS

Saipan: an earthquake of 7.2 magnitude struck near the Mariana Islands on Saturday, about 375 kilometers (230 miles) west of the U.S. territory, Guam, U.S. geologists said.  However, the extraordinary Northern Mariana Islands office said there were no reports of damage in the island nation, which stretches between Hawaii and the Philippines.

The earthquake struck at 7:19 am (2119 GMT Friday), with its epicenter at a depth of 4.7 kilometers, the USGS said.  Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said that there were no indications of a tsunami.  No tremor was felt in Saipan, the largest island in the chain of the Northern Mariana Islands, or in Hagatna, the capital of neighboring Guam.  Aftershock measured at 6.3 magnitude struck the island chain at a depth of 9 km about 10 hours, but did not cause a tsunami warning.  Read more: 7.2 magnitude earthquake strikes from the Mariana Islands: USGS - U.S. - World - Times of India .
