Remembering 1970, Cohn Style Information

Remembering 1970, Cohn Style Information:If you think about 1970, you probably remember the big public events. Perhaps the first Earth Day, or the tragic shootings at Kent State University.

Marc Cohn memories are a little more musical, a little more personal. He thinks that the dramatic year 1, in which he first heard some of his favorite albums. Classic recordings Simon And Garfunkel, Badfinger and Grateful Dead. Some of the songs from these discs was left with Cone, who is currently putting them on your new record, listens to stand 1970, which was released on July 20.

The singer will be bringing some of them are well thought out precious stones, as well as his own carefully etching folk-pop poetry Ridgefield Playhouse on Saturday.

"This album started when (producer) John Leventhal, and I began to look at our favorite songs from this year," said a hoarse voice, Cohn, best known for his radio evergreen "Walking In Memphis".

"He and I share similar tastes in music, so that the initial choice was almost the same. We are the first, although I should include something from Neil Young" After the gold. But after a couple attempts, I thought: "These songs have already been done to perfection. Nevertheless, the basic conceptual idea still seemed like a good one," said Cohn.

Thus, instead of after the final version of the legendary songs, Cone is designed for more esoteric, or at least heard material from this year. Not to mention, as Cohn notes, from time to time "stupid" song about love. Some of these tunes really well, like Paul Simon's "Only Living Boy In New York" and Badfinger "No Matter What". Introduction silly side? The bread in the magnificent, if dull, "Make It With You".

"It was one of the most complex of them," says Cohn. "This is a beautiful melody, like all things bread, but poetically, it is not as deep as, say, Van Morrison. I do not want my version too seriously, because the song is really not built for it.

For fans who know Conan and serious songs, this collection covers come as a nice surprise. In Leventhal played all the instruments, without the drums (she was so much help just sing, "says Cohn) singer gives these songs the 70's sweet and unassuming new testimony.

But the main advantage is that Paul Simon song, written in anticipation of his break with Garfunkel. Ignoring the choir backing vocals on the original Cohn sings "Only Living Boy in the thigh, growly, the almost tossed with lyrics. Try to imagine, Tom Waits with a voice and diction is not torn to shreds, and you get some idea.

Generally speaking, despite the sad prognosis of his best songs, Cohn gives newfound optimism not only his music but for his life. This is due, at least in part, an attempt to hijack a car he survived in Colorado in 2005. During this terrible event, a bullet hit Cohn in the temple, but miraculously did not penetrate his skull. When asked if the incident had long-term implications, the composer quickly answered in the affirmative.

"Of course, I would not recommend to anyone," says Cohn, chuckling. "However, the incident first, it seemed disruptive, but then became very free thing for me. After the shock, I felt a deep sense of gratitude and appreciation of all that exists. Of course, for my family (Cohn has two children with his wife, reporter Elizabeth Vargas ABC News, and two from a previous marriage), but also for my career. "

He said that he pledged to be on the road more after his great second chance.

"I really feel the obligation now to play for people who have supported me since my debut in 1991," said Cohn. "This is a great job I have. And since the shooting, it became vividly clear. And you know something?" I'm never gonna forget about it. "
